Fires
California is burning. While I live in the Los Angeles area, I am in a fire-free zone, thank goodness. I think my neighborhood is too covered by concrete and urban sprawl to be affected much by the spreading fires (let’s hope!). And while I cannot see big plumes of smoke, I am experiencing fire signs all around my house. The sky is blue to the north and west and alarmingly brown to the south and east. The air is thick - literally thick and the light looks like sunset all day long. Last night the moon was the color of a burnt sienna crayon, and this morning, my car was covered by a light dusting of ash. I cannot imagine what it is like closer to the hot zones. The weather report says that the winds are diminishing, and I hope that means the fires will soon be under control.

Well, I’m about as close to the fires as you can be without being in much danger. It’s been rather frustrating being locked up inside since Sunday. It’s very smokey, with thick, dense air. Lots of ashes. We get some periods of relatively clean air once in a while depending on the direction of the wind, but can’t really enjoy it. We’ve had friends evacuated from their houses, but no one I know has lost anything…yet. The latest thing I heard this morning was that many of the homes being lost were old, and therefore, some of the ash contains asbestos. Lovely.
Oh, that is lovely. Nothing like a nice air cocktail of ash and asbestos. I’m glad you and your family are safe.
